This is a little project I’ve worked on for a few months. It all started when I heard the song “Eyes on Fire” and thought immediately of the Seventh Doctor. The mix ended up too long for one disc, so you can either pad it out to two discs with other songs (I’ll suggest a few at the end) or make it strictly an itunes/mp3 player mix.
One beginning - ”The Best Way to Travel” The Moody Blues
“Distance is gone.
Will we find out
How life began?
Will be find out?
Speeding through the universe,
Thinking is the best way to travel”
(Even though this song is very likely about tripping on drugs, the lyrics could easily be the theme song for a children’s show about time-traveling teachers.)
One regeneration - “On the Run” Pink Floyd
(Instrumental)
(This song starts out thrilling and becomes horrifying as it progresses, full of sampled sounds such as screams and crashes. It’s about running so long that you aren’t sure anymore what you’re running from.)
Two beginning - “Maybe Tomorrow” Terry Bush
“Down this road that never seems to end,
Where new adventure lies just around the bend.
So if you want to join me for a while,
Just grab your hat, come travel light, that’s hobo style.”
(I heard this one in a Babelcolour tribute and couldn’t NOT use it. It’s too much like him. It’s a theme song from another show, but who cares, right?)
Two regeneration - ”I Ran (So Far Away)” A Flock of Seagulls
“And I ran, I ran so far away.
I just ran, I ran all night and day.
I couldn’t get away.
Reached out a hand to touch your face
You’re slowly disappearing from my view.”
(Mikhail picked this one, and if you replace all of the lines about a “girl” with a “boy”, you’ve got a Two/Jamie love story. Also, the lyrics really do work pretty well.)
Three beginning - “Fly Away” Lenny Kravitz
“Oh I want to get away.
I want to fly away.
Yeah yeah yeah
Let’s go and see the stars,
The milky way or even Mars
Where it could just be ours.”
(How is this NOT the Third Doctor’s song?)
Three regeneration - “The Farthest Star” VNV Nation
“We possess the power
If this should start to fall apart,
To mend divides, to change the world,
To reach the farthest star.”
(This song reminds me of the less arrogant Third Doctor toward the end of his run, when he wasn’t trying simply to escape Earth, when he started showing that he cared about people other than himself.)
Four beginning - “My, My, Time Flies” Enya
“My, my, time flies.
One step and we’re on the moon,
The next step into the stars.”
(Another one I heard on a fan video, but I feel it’s great for his long and varied run.)
Four regeneration - ”The Adventure” Angels and Airwaves
“I’m the first to know, my dearest friends,
Even if your hope has burned with time,
Anything that’s dead shall be regrown.”
(I’m not sure why I had this switched with “I Remember” for Five and Four. It’s actually reminiscent of Four’s final speech before he regenerates.)
Five beginning - “Cricket” The Kinks
“I know of no game more fitting
Than the age old game of cricket.
It has honour, it has character and it’s British.”
(Why the hell not?)
Five regeneration - “I Remember” Kaskade + Deadmau5
“I remember
Feeling the past moving in,
Letting a new day begin.
Hold to the time that you know.
You don’t have to move on to let go.”
(Five hears many of the people he met in that body as he’s dying. It’s also a song about rebirth.)
Six beginning - “Because I’m Awesome” The Dollyrots
“They say I’m gifted, uh huh,
Well I’m a certified prodigy.
I’m gonna own you, uh huh.
I’m gonna bring you to your knees.”
(Arrogance in song form! There’s even a line about the singer’s great fashion sense.)
Six regeneration - “Measuring Cups” Andrew Bird
“Put your backpack on your shoulder;
Be the good little soldier.
It’s no different when you’re older.
You’re predisposed.
That’s all for questions now the case is closed!”
(The song is actually about indoctrination in schools, but I like to think it’s about his trial.)
Seven beginning - “Magical Mystery Tour” The Beatles
“Roll up!
(That’s an invitation)
Roll up for the Mystery Tour!
Roll up!
(To make a reservation)
Roll up for the Mystery Tour!”
(It’s a simple song that I believe describes the strange, whimsical worlds the Seventh Doctor visits perfectly.)
Seven regeneration - “Eyes on Fire” Blue Foundation
“I’m taking it slow,
Feeding my flame,
Shuffling the cards of your game.
And just in time,
In the right place,
Suddenly I will play my ace.”
(This song is the reason I started this mix. It’s his ending song, all over. Calculating, manipulative… and it mentions Ace!)
Eight beginning - “New Soul” Yael Naim
“I’m a new soul.
I came to this strange world
Hoping I could learn a bit about how to give and take.
But since I came here,
Felt the joy and the fear,
Finding myself making every possible mistake”
(This is movie Eighth Doctor and also, at the beginning, audio Eighth Doctor. He’s sweet and idealistic and more trusting than he ought to be. In fact, that’s exactly what gets him into trouble.)
Eight regeneration- “The Sparrows and the Nightingales” Wofsheim
“Move in circles walk on lines,
No human being in sight.
Calm the winds
And calm the seas.
Let´s try another kind of peace.
Who fights this Holy civil war?
A million men in uniform.”
(A song about the Time War.)
Nine beginning - “The Cave” Mumford & Sons
“And I’ll find strength in pain,
And I will change my ways.
I’ll know my name as it’s called again.”
(Starts out sad and lost and becomes this broad, hopeful song about finding out who you are again.)
Nine regeneration - “Moonlight Serenade” Glen Miller
(Instrumental)
(Even though this is the song Captain Jack dances to with Rose, I think of it as the Ninth Doctor’s song about finding his inner calm… and romance? Yeah, romance.)
Ten beginning - “I Want to Have Fun” Of Montreal
“Why does it seem
Like every little bird sings sweetly
Just for you and me?
Take my hand;
Let’s run away,
Go enjoy the day.”
(I’ll admit it’s a bit similar to “Song for Ten” which is officially his song, but it’s a sweet little song about having fun with people you love.)
Ten regeneration - “Deep (Channeling Tori Amos)” Anti-M
“Visions show me what was lost
As we move on to pay the cost.
In tears of rage for fear of one,
The damage cannot be undone.”
(Time Lord Victorious regret, obviously.)
Eleven beginning - “Nemo” Nightwish
“Walk the dark path.
Sleep with angels.
Call the past for help.
Touch me with your love,
And reveal to me my true name.”
(It almost outlines some of his episodes. Weeping angels? Check. Calling on past owed favors? Check. The whole subplot about his name? CHECK!)
Eleven ending- “A Thousand Years” Sting
“If it takes another thousand years, a thousand wars,
The towers rise to numberless floors in space,
I could shed another million tears, a million breaths,
A million names but only one truth to face.”
(He’s lived that long at this point, running away from something. Everything. Mostly his name. Will he run for a thousand more years?)
Optional songs for padding to two discs:
“Traveller in Time” Uriah Heep (for the Doctor in any regeneration)
“Princes of the Universe” Queen (for the Master)
“I Am Free, That Is Why I’m Lost” Aesthesys (good instrumental for the Doctor)
“The Changingman” Paul Weller (for the Doctor)
“Across the Universe” The Beatles (always a good opener even though we’ve already used the Beatles)
“True Faith” New Order (for the Doctor)
“Exterminate Regenerate” Chameleon Circuit
and of course “Doctorin’ the TARDIS” The Timelords (The KLF)
There are TONS of songs you can use, but I don’t want to mention all of them because some are going on my next mix.
